Kiwanis empowers communities to improve the world by making lasting differences in the lives of children. Kiwanis strives to be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive. Our Kiwanis club fulfills the Kiwanis mission by serving our community through Kiwanis Community Service Projects and Service Leadership Programs.
Kiwanis Service
Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Members stage approximately 150,000 service projects and raise nearly $100 million every year for communities, families and projects. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When Kiwanis club members serve kids, they support the Kiwanis causes: health and nutrition, education and literacy, and youth leadership development. Thanks to those causes, members make an impact that lasts — from infancy to early adulthood.
Service Leadership Programs
Our Kiwanis club focuses on changing the world by serving children, one child in our community at a time. We sponsor a Kiwanis Builders Club for adolescents; and Key Clubs for teens at Elyria High School and Elyria Catholic High School.
Community Service Projects
The Kiwanis Club of Elyria sponsors Safety Town, ReadWriteRide, and our college scholarship program.
Safety Town
For 63+ years, the Kiwanis Club of Elyria has sponsored the Safety Town program, where children who will be entering Kindergarten in the fall attend a one week course to learn about school bus safety, stranger danger, street crossing rules, fire safety, 911 emergency calls, and more. Working traffic signals, crosswalks, and traffic provided by the children on vehicles help give the children the experience they need before they take their final walk on a real street with real traffic and signals. Kiwanis provides site maintenance and funding for the program.
ReadWriteRide
To promote literacy, the Kiwanis Club of Elyria sponsors an annual contest for all third graders in the Elyria City School District. Students read a book, write a book report and do a presentation before Kiwanis member judges. Winners can win a Youth Mountain Bike and other prizes.
College Scholarships
Our Kiwanis club raises funds for college scholarships for Elyria High School and Elyria Catholic High School students.
